Couples therapy for a sexless marriage
I help couples who love each other, but stopped having sex, find their way back to desire without blame and without pressure. I’m an AASECT-certified sex therapist, and most of what feels broken between you is a misread, not a flaw.
Maybe this is you
You love each other. You just stopped touching.
Maybe one of you reaches and the other pulls away. Maybe you both stopped trying because trying felt worse than not. Maybe you sleep in separate rooms now, or you’ve become excellent co-parents and roommates who rarely feel wanted.
The partner who wants more feels rejected. The partner who wants less feels pressured. Both of you feel alone. You haven’t ruined it, and neither of you is broken. You’re caught in a cycle, and cycles can change.
Questions couples ask
Sexless marriage: what you should know
What is considered a sexless marriage?
A sexless marriage is commonly defined as one where a couple has sex about ten times a year or less. The number matters less than how you both feel: if the lack of sex is causing hurt, distance or resentment for either of you, it is worth addressing.
Is sex once a month a sexless marriage?
By the most common definition, no. About twelve times a year sits just above that line. But frequency alone does not decide whether something is wrong. What matters is whether you both feel desired, connected and able to talk about it.
Why do marriages become sexless?
Most sexless marriages are not about a lack of love. Common causes include a difference in desire, stress from work and children, unspoken resentment, a betrayal that never fully healed, pain or medical and hormonal changes, and a pursue-and-withdraw cycle where one partner pushes and the other avoids. Often several of these are happening at once.
Can a sexless marriage be fixed?
Yes, in many cases. When both partners are willing to look at what is happening, desire and intimacy can return. The work starts with understanding the cycle you are in, then practicing new ways to talk about sex and to reconnect physically, at a pace that feels safe for both of you.
How does couples therapy for a sexless marriage work?
Sex therapy is talk therapy. There is no touching, nudity or sexual activity in sessions, ever. We start with an assessment of your history and what is getting in the way, use structured dialogue so each of you feels heard, and give you exercises to do privately at home at your own pace. If pain, erection changes, hormones or medications may be involved, I will suggest a check-in with your doctor so medical care and therapy work together.
When is it time to walk away from a sexless marriage?
There is no single rule. It may be time to consider leaving when one partner has refused any effort for a long time, when there is contempt or abuse, or when you have honestly tried and realized the relationship has run its course. My role is not to push you to stay or go. It is to help you see the situation clearly so you can choose with honesty and care.
What if my partner won’t come to therapy?
You can start on your own. Individual sessions can help you understand your part in the cycle, communicate what you need without blame, and decide what you want next. Often a partner becomes more willing once they see things changing.
Is this the right fit? If depression, hopelessness or substance use is the main concern right now, I’m not the right fit, and I’ll gladly help you find a provider who is.
