Therapy after infidelity, betrayal and secret porn use

The discovery changed everything. Maybe it was an affair, a hidden account or years of porn you didn’t know about. You don’t have to decide today whether to stay. You need a steady place to understand what happened and a structured way forward, whichever way you go.

If you’re the one who found out

You’re not overreacting. Betrayal hits the body.

  • You replay the moment you found out, over and over
  • You check their phone, then hate that you checked
  • You wonder what else you missed, and what was real
  • You’re holding it together for the kids, for work, for everyone

If you’re the one who broke trust

You want to repair it, and you don’t know how.

  • You’re carrying shame and don’t know what to say
  • Porn or an affair became something you couldn’t stop
  • You want to understand why, not just promise it won’t happen again
  • You’re afraid there’s no way back

How we work through it

A structured path, not endless processing

As a certified sex therapist and Imago couples therapist, I hold both the betrayal and the intimacy that came apart with it.

1. Stabilize

Make sense of the shock, set agreements for right now and stop the spiral of questions at 2am.

2. Understand

Look honestly at what led here, including compulsive or secretive porn use, without excusing it.

3. Repair or decide

Practice rebuilding trust and intimacy, or make an honest choice about the relationship with support.

Questions

Questions about betrayal recovery

Can a relationship survive infidelity?

Many couples do rebuild after an affair. It takes honesty, time and structure. Therapy helps you decide whether you want to, and gives you a way to do it if you do.

Is my partner addicted to porn?

“Porn addiction” isn’t a formal diagnosis, but compulsive or secretive porn use is real and it hurts relationships. What matters more than the label is whether the behavior feels out of control, is being hidden, or is damaging trust. We look at that honestly, without excusing it and without shaming anyone.

Should we come together or separately?

Often both. Many couples start with joint sessions to stabilize, and the partner who was hurt may also need individual space to process. We decide together in the first session what fits your situation.

What is betrayal trauma?

Betrayal trauma is the shock that follows discovering a partner’s affair, hidden porn use or deception. It can show up as replaying the discovery, checking, trouble sleeping and feeling unsure what was real. These are normal responses to a real injury, and they ease with support and structure.
